相传南宋绍兴元年，浙江台州府天台县李善人平生乐善好施，常常救济穷人。李善人老来得子取名修缘，这修缘像是与佛门结下了不解之缘，竟在自己成婚当天，不辞而别出家当了一个和尚，法号道济。李善人夫妇心急如焚，从此卧床不起，遂派人寻找，等到道济回到家中，李善人夫妇早已亡故，恶管家已霸占了李府家产，道济经受不住这巨大的打击，从此疯癫不知去向...... 不知过了多少日多少月多少年，突然在街市中出现了一个疯疯癫癫的和尚，他惩恶扬善扶危济贫，有人叫他疯和尚，也有人尊称他为济公。 济公初居住在杭州灵隐寺，传说他为罗汉转世，本姓李，祖上乃宋太宗驸马。济公二十七岁出家，不戒酒肉，破衣烂衫，不知情者皆道其疯癫，却不知其实为得道高僧。济公济困扶危，惩治强梁，经常用一些诙谐的小法术教训那些欺压百姓、鱼肉乡民的奸佞恶霸。恶人提起他又恨又怕，百姓们则对济公师父爱戴有加。
