Oficer straży i poeta Cyrano de Bergerac zakochuje się w swej krewniaczce, nieświadomej niczego Roxanne. Jednak sprawa nie jest prosta. Cyrano posiada bowiem zbyt wielki nos i uważa, że dlatego Roxanne nie będzie chciała go przyjąć. Zaczyna więc pisać do niej listy posługując się nazwiskiem swego podwładnego, Christiana, który również ją kocha, ale nie wie jak jej to powiedzieć. Roxanne poddaje się urokowi listów i zakochuje się w Christianie wierząc, że to on jest ich autorem.
