Het is het jaar 1858. In de Joodse wijk in Bologna, dringen soldaten van de Paus het huis van de Mortara’s binnen. Op bevel van de kardinaal moeten ze de zevenjarige zoon Edgardo meenemen. Als baby schijnt hij in het geheim te zijn gedoopt door het kindermeisje, met als gevolg dat hij nu volgens de Roomse wetten een katholieke opvoeding moet krijgen. Edgardo’s ouders blijven in wanhoop achter en doen er alles aan om hun zoon terug te krijgen. Met brede steun van binnen en buiten de Joodse gemeenschap krijgt de strijd van de Mortara’s al snel een politieke lading. Terwijl de Kerk en de paus hun machtspositie zien wankelen met de steeds luidere roep om een verenigd Italië, weigeren ze de jongen op te geven.
