2008. De wereldeconomie wordt getroffen door de ergste crisis sinds 1929. Slechts één man, een jonge handelaar, is de vermeende verantwoordelijke voor de eerste en meest extravagante in een reeks schandalen die de financiële markten over de hele wereld zal treffen: Jérôme Kerviel. Het grootste verlies van een bank in de historie (bijna 5 miljard euro) wordt ontdekt bij de Franse bank Société Générale en al snel toegeschreven aan de rustige, 31-jarige oud werknemer. Hij werd 8 jaar eerder aangenomen als eenvoudige kantoorbediende bij de bank maar niemand had kunnen voorspellen dat Jérôme zo snel zo ver zou gaan. Hij werd de ster van de beursvloer en stond bij zijn collega's bekend als 'de cash machine'.
