In zonovergoten Californië aanvaardt Morris Buttermaker (Matthau), een voormalig Minor League baseballprof die nu halfbezopen zwembaden reinigt, een baan als coach van het Little League team The Bears. De haast aanstootgevende mix van vaak vuilbekkende jongetjes uit diverse milieus past merkwaardig goed bij de zure, ongeïnteresseerde nieuwe coach die om de haverklap 'Shut up!' roept. Maar het honkballen wordt er niet beter op. De rauwe wijsheden van de kinderen maken Buttermaker echter sober en met het aantrekken van sportmeisje Amanda (O'Neal) en James Dean-schoffie (Haley) worden The Bears warempel 'Bad News' voor tegenstanders.
