Jean è una casalinga disperata nella suburbia americana anni '70. Il suo sogno di avere un figlio non si è avverato e lei è rassegnata ad una vita di ennui borghese. Ma un giorno suo marito Eddie si presenta alla porta con un neonato in braccio. "È nostro", le dice, e tanto basta: Jean è abituata a ricevere regali inaspettati di incerta provenienza dal marito, che sa vagamente essere un ladruncolo. Poco dopo Eddie sparisce e un suo ex sodale afroamericano, Cal, preleva in fretta e furia Jean e il bambino dalla loro bella casa per portarli in salvo presso un domicilio segreto. Ma la fuga di Jean è destinata a continuare, in una situazione di pericolo crescente. E la donna sarà costretta a decidere se continuare a fare la bella statuina o decidersi a reagire.
