Halála után Karel Havlíček Borovský nemcsak műveit, hanem tizenéves lányát, Zdeňkát is a nemzetre hagyta. Az árván maradt lány sorsáról a cseh újjászületés hívei gondoskodnak, akik a cseh kultúra gyengédségének tökéletes szimbólumává akarják tenni. A lázadó Zdeňka azonban mindenáron a saját vágyai szerint akarja élni az életét. Ráadásul, amikor fülig beleszeret az osztrák hadsereg lengyel tisztjébe, a közönségkedvelő kislányból szó szerint egyik napról a másikra nemzetáruló és ribanc lesz.
