Anna Marchant általános iskolai tanárnő (Milla Jovovich) túléli egy Könnyfakasztó nevű sorozatgyilkos támadását, ám hiába látta a férfit, fejsérülése következtében többé nem képes arcokat felismerni: még a barátja arca is minden alkalommal új és más a számára. Egy terapeuta tanácsára ruházatuk és más jellegzetes ismertetőjegyeik alapján próbálja azonosítani az embereket, ám hamarosan kiderül számára, hogy egyvalakinek mégis felismeri az arcát: a Könnyfakasztót kereső Kerrest nyomozóét (Julian McMahon). Anna és a férfi fokozatosan egyre közelebb kerülnek egymáshoz, és együtt igyekeznek megtalálni a gyilkost, mielőtt az újból ölne.
