Když do zajateckého tábora v Pescaře v Itálii dorazí v srpnu 1943 plukovník amerického letectva Joseph L. Ryan, najde tu skupinku zbídačelých špinavých spojeneckých anglických vojáků. Po nepovedeném pokusu o útěk celé jednotky se nacisti rozhodnou vězně převézt na bezpečnější a snáze hlídatelné místo. Ale plukovník Ryan se nevzdává a nakonec se jim podaří utéct znovu a všem.
